The swastika (sometimes spelled svastika) is an ancient symbol dating back thousands of years, with roots across Eurasia. For centuries, it held purely positive connotations across various cultures—most notably in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. In these traditions, the swastika represents auspiciousness, prosperity, and the sun's eternal path. Its design, featuring arms bent at right angles, is often thought to symbolize cosmic forces or the cycle of life. To this day, the symbol can be found adorning temples, homes, and religious texts throughout Asia, where its original, peaceful meaning remains intact.

However, the swastika's history took a horrific turn in the early 20th century. In 1920, the Nazi Party adopted the swastika (the Hakenkreuz or "hooked cross") as its official emblem, twisting its ancient symbolism into a sign of racial purity and Aryan supremacy. Under Adolf Hitler's regime, the swastika became synonymous with antisemitism, state-sponsored violence, and the systematic murder of millions during the Holocaust. By displaying it on flags, uniforms, and propaganda, the Nazis cemented its association with evil in the global consciousness.

Today, displaying a swastika is restricted by law in several countries, including Germany and Austria, especially when it is used to promote Nazi ideology or incite hatred. Even in places without the same legal restrictions, public displays are widely considered deeply offensive and harmful.

Understanding the swastika requires acknowledging its two distinct and conflicting histories: a long tradition of sacred meaning and its modern appropriation by a regime of terror. Recognizing this duality is essential for understanding the symbol's complex legacy and the profound pain it continues to evoke for survivors and their descendants. While religious communities continue to preserve the symbol's original meaning, its modern association with Nazism ensures that any public display requires great care, context, and sensitivity.
