It was often presented as an act of devotion, said to help the wife and her dead husband in the afterlife. The word comes from the Sanskrit sati, meaning "virtuous woman."
Although some accounts described it as voluntary, there was often heavy social pressure, and sometimes force. British colonial authorities banned the practice in 1829, though isolated cases continued afterward. Today, it is illegal and widely condemned.
