Picture a liquid being heated so much that it goes past its normal boiling point, yet for a moment it still does not boil. That unusual extra heat is called superheat. The word can also mean to heat something, especially a liquid or steam, beyond its usual temperature limit.
You will often see this idea in science, engineering, and cooking warnings. Water in a very smooth cup in a microwave can become superheated and then burst into boiling when disturbed. In machines, controlled superheat can help a system work well, but too much of it can damage equipment or create danger. At heart, the word is about heat that goes farther than people normally expect.
Superheat can be a verb or a noun. As a verb, it means to heat something beyond its normal boiling point or expected temperature. As a noun, it refers to that extra heat or to the state in which a liquid or vapor has been heated beyond the usual boiling temperature.
The clearest example is water that has been heated in a very clean, smooth container. Because there may be few places for bubbles to form, the water can rise above 100°C or 212°F without boiling right away. Then, when the cup is moved or something is added, the water may suddenly boil over. That is why people warn about superheated water from a microwave.
The word is also common in engineering. Steam may be superheated after it has already become vapor so that it carries more usable energy and is less likely to leave damaging droplets in a turbine. In refrigeration systems, workers also measure superheat to check whether the refrigerant is behaving properly and whether the system is running safely.
So the idea behind superheat is not just "very hot." It is the idea of going beyond the normal boiling or operating point, sometimes in a useful and controlled way, and sometimes in a risky one.
