When astronomers talk about supergiants, they're not just talking about big stars, they're talking about really big ones. These are some of the largest and brightest stars in space. Think of Betelgeuse or Rigel; those are not your average twinkling lights in the night sky.
They are usually a later stage in the life of very massive stars. Some are hot and blue, while others are cooler and red, but all of them are huge and very bright. This stage does not last long, and many of these stars later explode as supernovas. You will usually see "supergiant" used only for stars, because it is a specific astronomy word.
A supergiant is a star with enormous size and brightness, far beyond that of our Sun. These stars are among the largest and most luminous known in the universe, often tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of times brighter than the Sun. In many cases, they appear during a later stage in the evolution of very massive stars, especially stars that began with several times the Sun's mass.
There are two well-known categories: blue supergiants, which are very hot, and red supergiants, which are cooler at the surface and much more swollen. Betelgeuse, a reddish star in the constellation Orion, is a famous red supergiant. Rigel, a brilliant blue-white star also in Orion, is a classic blue supergiant.
Supergiants are relatively rare because very massive stars are much less common than smaller ones. They burn through their fuel quickly, so they live much shorter lives. Some of them expand and cool into red supergiants, while others remain hotter for longer as blue supergiants. This growth can be so dramatic that if Betelgeuse were placed where our Sun is, it would stretch far past the orbit of Mars.
Eventually, many supergiants run out of fuel and collapse in a supernova, a powerful explosion that can briefly outshine a whole galaxy. The remains of such explosions can become neutron stars or black holes. So, when you hear "supergiant," think of a colossal star living fast, shining fiercely, and often heading toward a dramatic ending in the vastness of space.
