The term "superbug" usually refers to strains of bacteria that have become resistant to several antibiotics normally used to treat infections. In broader use, it can also refer to other drug-resistant microbes. It's not a single type of germ, but rather a growing collection of microbes that pose a serious threat to public health. These resilient organisms are often called "drug-resistant" because they've evolved ways to survive exposure to the medicines designed to destroy them.

The development of superbugs is a natural evolutionary process; bacteria evolve to survive. However, the rate at which this resistance is developing has accelerated dramatically in recent decades due to several human factors: the overuse of antibiotics in both humans and livestock, the improper use of prescriptions (like not completing a full course), and poor infection control practices in healthcare settings.
