Sunspots are temporary phenomena on the surface of the Sun, appearing as spots darker than their surroundings. These aren't actually areas without light; they're regions where intense magnetic activity inhibits convection, meaning heat isn't being brought to the surface as efficiently, making them cooler (around 3,700–4,500°C) compared to the surrounding photosphere (around 5,500°C). Even at those temperatures, they are still incredibly hot!

Sunspots are often grouped and follow an approximately 11-year cycle of activity known as the solar cycle. During periods of high sunspot activity (solar maximum), more flares and coronal mass ejections occur. These events can disrupt radio communications, damage satellites, and even cause geomagnetic storms that create beautiful auroras (Northern and Southern Lights) but also potentially impact power grids.

Historically, observing sunspots was dangerous, and it is still unsafe to look directly at the Sun without proper protection. Early astronomers like Galileo Galilei made important observations of sunspots in the early 17th century, challenging the then-held belief in a perfect and unchanging cosmos. Today, specialized telescopes and spacecraft continuously monitor these fascinating features to better understand our star's dynamic behavior and its influence on Earth and the solar system.
