The name itself gives you a clue to its chemical makeup: "Sucra-" refers to sucrose (a type of sugar), and "-fate" refers to sulfate. Sucralfate is actually a complex of aluminum hydroxide and sucrose sulfate. When it encounters stomach acid, this combination turns into a thick, sticky paste that binds directly to proteins at the ulcer site. This protective layer acts like a liquid bandage, shielding the sore from further damage caused by acid, bile salts, and digestive enzymes. It may also support local healing processes that help the tissue repair itself.

It's important to note that sucralfate is usually taken on an empty stomach, often one hour before meals, so it can properly adhere to the ulcerated tissue without being blocked by food.
