subjectivism

Subjectivism is a philosophical idea that gives a central place to personal experience, perception, and feeling when we judge truth, value, or meaning. In this view, some claims do not depend on a single objective standard that applies equally to everyone. Instead, they depend on the person making the judgment.

This does not necessarily mean that everything is random or meaningless. It means that human experience plays a major role in how we understand the world. Our feelings, beliefs, and personal history shape how we interpret what we see and hear.

The concept appears in many fields. In ethics, ethical subjectivism says that moral judgments express personal attitudes or feelings rather than universal moral facts. In aesthetics, it helps explain why people disagree about beauty, style, or artistic value. What one person finds moving or beautiful, another may not.

However, strong forms of subjectivism can be difficult to defend. If too much depends only on private opinion, it becomes harder to explain disagreement, shared standards, or common knowledge. For that reason, it is often contrasted with objectivism, which holds that at least some truths or values exist independently of individual opinion.

You will encounter discussions about subjectivism in philosophy classes, art criticism, and debates about morality. It is a challenging idea because it asks how much of what we call truth or value comes from the world itself, and how much comes from us. So when someone says, "That is just my opinion," they may be expressing a view that leans in a subjectivist direction.
