Styrofoam is a brand name, originally associated with Dow, for a type of rigid polystyrene foam used mainly for insulation. People often use the word loosely for many foam products, especially white cups, takeout boxes, and packaging, but those items are usually made from other forms of polystyrene foam rather than the branded material itself. Because of that, the word has both a strict meaning and a broader everyday one.

The material is light, stiff, and full of tiny air pockets, which helps it resist heat transfer. That makes it useful in construction and insulation, where keeping temperatures steady matters. In casual conversation, though, someone might point to a foam cooler or a pile of protective packaging and call it Styrofoam simply because it looks similar. That habit is very common, even if it is not technically precise.

The word also carries an environmental shadow. Foam plastics are known for lasting a long time in waste streams, breaking into small pieces, and being difficult to recycle in many places. For that reason, people often talk about reducing their use of foam containers and switching to paper, molded fiber, or other alternatives.
