Studentship refers to the state, condition, or period of being a student, especially in higher education. It can describe student life in a general way, including the work, study, and development that come with formal education. In this sense, it points to the experience or status of being engaged in study rather than to one single activity.

The word also has a more specific and very important academic meaning relating to funding. In many modern university contexts, especially in British English, a studentship is a scholarship, grant, or funded place awarded to support a student's study or research, often at the postgraduate or doctoral level. For example, someone might receive a studentship to cover fees and living costs while completing a PhD.

Historically, particularly in some British universities, studentship could also refer to formal membership or a titled place within a college. That sense is much less common today and is mainly found in older or institution-specific use.
