strontium

Strontium is a chemical element with the symbol Sr and atomic number 38. Discovered in 1790 by Adair Crawford and William Cruickshank, its name originates from Strontian, a village in Scotland where the mineral was first identified. It is a relatively soft metal, appearing silvery-white when freshly cut, though it tarnishes quickly to a yellowish tint when exposed to air.

Now, strontium isn't something you encounter daily in its pure form. It does not occur freely in nature and is found combined with other elements in minerals such as celestine and strontianite. However, it plays several important roles. Perhaps most famously, strontium compounds are used to create a brilliant crimson red color in fireworks and signal flares. This vivid hue makes them especially valuable in pyrotechnics.

But its uses go beyond color. Certain radioactive isotopes, especially strontium-89 and strontium-90, have had medical and industrial uses. For example, strontium-89 has been used to help relieve pain from some cancers that spread to bone, and strontium-90 has been used in devices such as radioisotope power sources. Historically, strontium was also added to the glass of older television picture tubes to help block X-ray emissions.

Interestingly, strontium behaves chemically much like calcium, which means living things can take it into bones and teeth. Because of this, scientists study strontium isotopes in teeth, bones, rocks, and fossils to learn where a person or animal may have lived, moved, or found food. This usually helps with tracing origin and environment rather than telling an exact age. From dazzling fireworks displays to scientific research and specialized technology, strontium is a versatile element with a surprisingly wide reach.
