Streptomycin is an antibiotic medication in a class of drugs called aminoglycosides. Its story begins with Selman Waksman and his team at Rutgers University, who isolated it from Streptomyces griseus, a soil bacterium, during World War II. This discovery was pivotal because streptomycin proved remarkably effective against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes tuberculosis, a disease that ravaged populations for centuries.

Before streptomycin, TB treatment often involved lengthy hospital stays and offered limited success. Streptomycin provided hope, dramatically reducing mortality rates and paving the way for shorter, more effective treatments. It works by binding to bacterial ribosomes (the structures responsible for protein synthesis), disrupting their ability to produce essential proteins and ultimately killing the bacteria or inhibiting their growth.

However, streptomycin is not a cure-all. Overuse has led to antibiotic resistance in some bacteria, meaning it is no longer effective against certain strains. Side effects can include hearing loss and kidney damage, so its use is carefully monitored by doctors.

Today, while it is not the first line of treatment for most TB cases because of resistance concerns and the development of newer drugs, streptomycin still has a role in treating some forms of tuberculosis, as well as other serious bacterial infections such as plague and tularemia. It stands as a testament to the power of scientific discovery in combating infectious diseases, a legacy born from soil and transformed into a life-saving medicine.
