Streptokinase is a protein originally obtained from Streptococcus bacteria, which is where the name comes from. It is used as a thrombolytic drug, which means a medicine that helps dissolve blood clots. These clots can block normal blood flow and cause life-threatening problems, especially in emergencies such as some heart attacks, pulmonary embolism, or blocked blood vessels.
Here is the basic story of how it works: blood clots are held together by fibrin, a protein that acts like a net. Streptokinase helps turn plasminogen in the blood into plasmin, a substance that can cut through that fibrin net. As the fibrin breaks down, the clot can dissolve and blood can move through the vessel again.
It is usually given through a vein, and timing matters a great deal. In the right patient, quick treatment can reduce damage by restoring blood flow sooner. But this benefit comes with an important risk: serious bleeding. For that reason, doctors avoid it in some people, including those who have had recent surgery, active bleeding, or certain other medical dangers.
Although newer clot-dissolving drugs are now often preferred in many places, streptokinase still matters because it can be effective and less expensive. In that sense, it tells a larger story in medicine: even a substance linked to bacteria can be turned into a treatment that helps save lives when every minute counts.
