You've probably heard the word "stereo" when people talk about music players, speakers, or car sound systems. Most often, it means sound that is played through two channels, left and right, so the music feels wider and more natural than sound coming from just one source.

It is short for "stereophonic sound." In everyday English, though, people also use it to mean the equipment itself, such as a home stereo or a car stereo. You might say, "I'm upgrading my car stereo," or, "The living room has a great stereo setup."

You may also hear it in phrases like "stereo headphones," where the left and right sides carry different signals. Even though newer systems like surround sound use more channels, stereo remains the standard everyday term for rich, spacious sound.
