stepsister

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /stˈɛpsɪstə/

US

  • /ˈstɛpˌsɪstər/

Description

A stepsister is not related to you by blood. She becomes your sister when one of your parents marries someone who already has a daughter. Think of Cinderella: Drizella and Anastasia are her stepsisters. This kind of relationship can be close and loving, difficult and tense, or anything in between. The word "step" shows that the connection comes through marriage, not biology. This is different from a "half-sister," who shares one biological parent with you.
