A stalactite is an icicle-shaped formation that hangs from the ceiling of caves, formed by the slow deposition of minerals from dripping water. The word comes from the Greek word stalaktos, meaning "dripping." Over centuries, mineral-rich water seeps through cracks in cave ceilings. As each drop enters the cave's atmosphere, it releases carbon dioxide or evaporates, leaving behind a tiny deposit of calcium carbonate or other minerals. These deposits accumulate over time, building up layer by layer to create the stunning structures we know as stalactites.
