The word "sportsperson" is mainly used for someone who takes part in sports, whether professionally, seriously, or sometimes at an amateur level. In modern English, one of its main uses is as a gender-neutral alternative to "sportsman" or "sportswoman." Depending on the context, it can refer to a player, competitor, or athlete in almost any sport.

The meaning is usually straightforward: a person involved in sport. For example, a newspaper might describe a tennis champion, a football player, or an Olympic runner as a sportsperson. The word often appears in formal writing, biographies, interviews, or educational material, especially when the writer wants an inclusive term. In everyday speech, many people may still say "athlete," "player," or name the specific sport instead.

Sometimes the word carries a slightly positive tone. It can suggest that the person is not only skilled but also respectful, fair, and serious about the game. Still, that idea is secondary, not the basic meaning. A sportsperson is first of all someone who participates in sport; any added sense of good character comes from the context. This makes the word useful when talking about role models in sport, but it does not automatically mean a person is morally exceptional just because the label is used.
