A sphincterotomy is a surgical procedure in which a surgeon cuts part of a sphincter muscle to reduce how tightly it stays closed. A sphincter is a ring-shaped muscle that works like a valve, opening and closing a passage in the body. These muscles help control the movement of things like stool, urine, or bile. When working normally, they tighten to keep a passage closed and relax to let something pass.
Sometimes a sphincter stays too tight or goes into spasm. This can lead to pain, poor healing, or a blockage. A sphincterotomy is meant to break that pattern by cutting a small part of the muscle. Although it can work very well, a sphincterotomy is usually considered after less invasive treatment has failed. Doctors also weigh the benefits against the risks, which can include bleeding, infection, or in some cases reduced control of the affected muscle. In essence, the procedure is done to help an overly tight "gatekeeper" muscle relax enough for the body to work more normally again.
