A spermatid is like that: it is an immature male sex cell, formed in the testes after meiosis, but it is not quite a working sperm yet. The journey of creating life is complex, and the spermatid plays an important role in male reproductive development. Think of spermiogenesis as an intense training program. The spermatid is reshaping itself into a cell built to deliver genetic information. Once this process is complete, the now mature sperm cell, called a spermatozoon, is ready to begin its journey.

It is a key term for understanding how sperm cells are made, because it names the stage just before full sperm maturity.
