A soutane (pronounced soo-TAN) is a long, close-fitting, ankle-length garment traditionally worn by clergy, especially in the Roman Catholic Church. The word comes through Old French from Latin subtanea, meaning "undergarment," because this type of robe was once worn under church vestments such as an alb or surplice. Over time, it became standard daily dress for many clerics.
The classic soutane is black, but church rank can be shown through color. Priests usually wear black; bishops may wear black with purple trim or purple in more formal settings; cardinals are linked with scarlet; and the Pope wears white. The garment usually has a long row of buttons down the front and is often worn with a clerical collar. It is commonly made from wool or lighter modern fabrics. Although many clergy now choose a clerical shirt and trousers for everyday work, the soutane still carries a strong sense of tradition and religious commitment.
