It usually has several movements, or sections, and each one can have its own speed and mood. The word is strongly linked with classical music. You might hear someone mention Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" or see a student working on a difficult passage from one. The word comes from the Italian sonare, meaning "to sound."
