Socialism is a political and economic idea that says a society should organize its economy for the good of the whole community, not mainly for private profit. In many socialist views, key parts of the economy, especially major industries and natural resources, should be owned or controlled by the public, by workers, or by the state. The main goal is to reduce large gaps in wealth and give people a fairer share of what society produces.

The idea grew stronger during and after the Industrial Revolution, when many thinkers reacted to harsh working conditions and huge differences between rich owners and poor workers. They imagined systems in which workers and communities would have more power and would benefit more directly from their labor.

However, "socialism" is a broad term with many forms. Some versions support democratic elections and a mixed economy, while pushing for strong public services and more public ownership. Others have supported a more fully planned economy with much stronger state control. Communism is related but usually describes a more radical system that aims for a classless society and the end of private ownership altogether.

Today, the word often appears in political debate and can carry strong feelings. Sometimes it refers to full public ownership of major industries. Sometimes people use it more loosely for policies that reduce inequality, expand welfare, or increase government involvement in the economy. Because of that, the exact meaning often depends on the speaker and the context.

You might hear someone say, "She supports socialist policies like public healthcare," or "The party wants a more socialist economic model." In a critical context, someone might say, "Critics argue that socialist systems reduce competition and innovation."
