A soap, short for "soap opera," is a continuing drama, usually on radio or television, with emotional relationships, family trouble, secrets, and cliffhangers. This meaning grew because many early serialized dramas were sponsored by companies that made cleaning products. So, in English, "soap" can refer either to something used for washing or to a highly dramatic continuing show.
