Most of the time, "snook" refers to a strong, popular game fish. It lives in warm coastal waters and also in brackish areas where salt water and fresh water mix. People often mention it in fishing stories, restaurant menus, and wildlife writing, especially in places such as Florida, the Gulf coast, and the Caribbean. In that sense, the word is simply a noun: you catch one, cook one, or see one moving through shallow water.

There is also a second meaning, mostly in British English, connected to the expression "cock a snook." Here, it means a rude gesture of mockery, like thumbing your nose, and by extension it can mean showing contempt or defiance. For example, a newspaper might say that an artist "cocked a snook at tradition," meaning the artist openly mocked or ignored it.

The earlier card treated this word as a verb meaning "sneak" or "snoop," but that does not match standard modern usage. So if you meet "snook" in the wild, picture either a prized coastal fish or, in the fixed British phrase, a small act of open disrespect.
