In a history book, it may refer more broadly to a small seagoing vessel, especially one used by a navy. Even so, the main idea stays consistent: it suggests a vessel that is relatively small, agile, and useful. That mix of simplicity, speed, and long maritime history is why the sloop remains such a well-known type of boat.
