The term "sleepwalker" refers to someone who gets out of bed and navigates their environment while still asleep. This condition, medically known as somnambulism, occurs during the deepest stage of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. It is significantly more common in children than adults and often runs in families, suggesting a strong genetic component.

Sleepwalking episodes can range from simple actions, like sitting up in bed or walking across a room, to more complex behaviors such as eating, cleaning, or even attempting to drive. The person may appear awake—sometimes even having their eyes open with a glassy stare—but they are actually unconscious and typically have no memory of the event upon waking. While often portrayed dramatically in fiction—think of Lady Macbeth's guilt-ridden pacing or the eerie figures in Edgar Allan Poe's tales—most incidents are relatively benign. However, it is important to take precautions to ensure the sleepwalker doesn't injure themselves by tripping, falling, or wandering into hazardous areas.

Historically, sleepwalking was shrouded in mystery and superstition, often linked to the supernatural or even demonic possession. Today, we understand it as a neurological phenomenon—a "glitch" in the brain's transition between sleep and wakefulness. So, while a sleepwalker might seem lost in another world, they are actually moving through the blurry boundary between sleep and wakefulness, all without any conscious awareness.
