skydive

verb

Pronunciation

UK

  • /skˈaɪdaɪv/

US

  • /ˈskaɪdaɪv/

Description

To skydive is not just to jump out of an airplane; it is to fall freely through the air for a short time before opening a parachute. It is both a sport and an adventure activity, and it takes courage as well as training. Some people try it once for the experience, while others do it again and again for fun, for charity events, or as part of military training. The idea behind the word is simple and vivid: you move through the sky and then dive back down toward the earth.
