Skuas are a group of large, powerfully built seabirds belonging to the family Stercorariidae. The name "skua" comes from the Faroese skúvur, which goes back to Old Norse. These birds are mostly found in the colder parts of the world, including the Arctic, Antarctica, and subantarctic islands, though some species migrate long distances across the equator.

What truly sets skuas apart is their feeding behavior. While they can hunt fish, chicks, eggs, and small animals, they are most famous for kleptoparasitism, the habit of stealing food caught by other animals. They will chase gulls, terns, and other seabirds until the frightened bird drops or spits up its meal. This fierce habit has earned them the nickname "pirate birds."

However, skuas are more than just thieves. They are also important scavengers, feeding on carrion and helping clean up their harsh environments. They are highly adaptable birds and can live in places where many other predators struggle. There are several species, and they differ in size and color, but they all share a bold manner and a strong predatory instinct.
