The word "skeletal" most literally refers to anything relating to the skeleton, the framework of bones inside the body. You might hear it in a hospital, a biology class, or a discussion of the skeletal system. But "skeletal" is not always about bones. It can also describe something reduced to its bare essentials, like a skeletal outline of a plan with only the main points and no extra detail. Imagine a building under construction: before the walls go up, you can see only the skeletal frame. A skeletal staff at work means only a very small number of people are there to keep things running.

"Skeletal" primarily describes anything connected to the skeleton, the internal framework of bones that supports and protects the body. You will often see it in medical or scientific contexts, such as "the skeletal system," "skeletal remains," or discussions of bone development and injury. In this literal sense, the word simply points to bones or the body’s framework.

But the word is also widely used in a more general, figurative way. It can describe something that has only its basic structure left, without much detail, support, or substance. A skeletal outline gives only the main points. A skeletal building frame shows the basic shape before the rest is added. A company operating with a skeletal staff has only the minimum number of workers needed to continue.

The word can also suggest that something looks very thin or bare, especially when only the framework is visible. Bare branches in winter may look skeletal, and an extremely thin person or animal may be described that way too, though that use can sound harsh.

Across these uses, the central idea stays the same: a visible framework with little beyond it. Whether the subject is bones, a building, a plan, or a workforce, "skeletal" points to something stripped down to its essential structure.
