sisal

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /sˈɪsəl/

US

  • /sˈaɪzəl/

Description

Sisal is a strong, durable fiber taken from the leaves of the Agave sisalana plant. People use it to make rope, twine, paper, rugs, mats, and other rough, sturdy products. Think of a natural fiber rug or the covering on a cat scratching post: that's often sisal at work. It is valued because it is tough and comes from a plant.

The plant grows well in hot, dry places, and its fiber is produced in countries such as Brazil, Tanzania, Kenya, and Mexico. You may not see the plant often, but its fiber appears in many everyday items.
