silverweed

Silverweed, often listed as Potentilla anserina and also known as Argentina anserina, is a creeping perennial plant in the rose family. Its name comes from the soft, silvery hairs on its leaves, which can make the plant shine when light or wind moves across it. Rather than standing tall, it spreads outward in low mats, sending out slender stems and bearing small yellow flowers with five petals through the warmer months.

But silverweed is more than just a ground plant with a soft shine. In earlier times, people used it in traditional herbal medicine, especially for stomach troubles and other minor complaints. Its roots are rich in starch, and in some regions they were cooked and eaten. The plant is also very adaptable, growing in damp meadows, near rivers, on coasts, and in other places where the soil may be poor or salty.

You might notice silverweed while walking through open country or along a path near water. Because it spreads so easily, some gardeners see it as a weed, while others value it for covering bare ground and helping hold soil in place. It also supports insect life and fits well into wild plant communities. In old stories, it was sometimes linked with protection and healing. So when you see that silver flash close to the ground, with yellow flowers rising from it, you are looking at a plant with a long history and a quiet kind of strength.
