Shrikes are predatory songbirds in the family Laniidae, known for their unusual hunting strategy and their somewhat unsettling habit of impaling prey. Unlike true birds of prey, which seize and carry animals with powerful talons, shrikes have the feet of perching birds. To make up for that, they use their strong, hooked beaks to kill prey and then skewer it on thorns, sharp twigs, or even man-made objects such as barbed wire. This behavior helps them hold food in place while they eat, store food for later, and in some cases may give certain toxic insects time to become safer to eat.

There are dozens of species found across Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. Many are marked by bold black masks and alert, upright postures, which give them the look of tiny outlaws on watch. Though they are small, they are true hunters. Their diet can include insects, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and even other birds.

Shrikes often live in open habitats such as grasslands, scrublands, farmland, and woodland edges, where they perch on exposed branches and wires to scan for movement. They are famously territorial and will defend their hunting grounds with surprising aggression. The genus name Lanius comes from the Latin word for "butcher," which suits their habit well. So if you are walking through open country and notice a masked little hunter watching from a high perch, you may be looking at one of the most striking and ruthless songbirds in the landscape.
