A shoplifter is not the kind of thief who breaks into a building. Instead, this is someone who goes into a store like a normal customer and secretly takes things without paying. The act is usually quiet and hidden, often done when workers are busy or not looking. Sometimes it happens because of need or impulse, but it always involves taking goods dishonestly. Unlike robbery, shoplifting does not usually involve force or threats.

A shoplifter is a person who steals goods from a retail place, such as a store, supermarket, or boutique, while appearing to be a real customer. What makes shoplifting different from many other kinds of theft is the method: it is usually done quietly and secretly, often by hiding an item in a pocket, bag, or coat and leaving without paying for it.

Shoplifting is not always about money problems. Sometimes it is linked to compulsive behavior, such as kleptomania, to the thrill of getting away with something, or to personal distress. Even if the act may seem small compared with other crimes, it can cost businesses a lot of money and can lead to serious legal trouble, especially if the person is caught more than once.

You will often see security cameras and store security staff in shops partly because of shoplifting. News reports sometimes talk about rises in shoplifting during hard economic times or around major shopping events like Black Friday. In stories, a character may be shown as a desperate shoplifter, which can help explain both their motives and the consequences of what they do. For example: "Driven by poverty, she reluctantly became a shoplifter to feed her children." Or, "The security guard identified the shoplifter trying to hide a sweater under his coat."
