shipper

A2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ʃˈɪpə/

US

  • /ˈʃɪpər/

Description

This word has two common lives. In its older and more practical sense, it means the person or company that sends goods from one place to another. If a business sends boxes through UPS or FedEx, that business is the shipper, and the delivery company is the carrier.

Online, though, the word often means something very different. It can describe a fan who strongly supports a romantic pairing between characters, or sometimes real people. If someone says they are a shipper of two characters, they mean they want that relationship to happen. The meaning usually becomes clear from the context.
