Shigella is a genus of bacteria that causes shigellosis, an infection of the intestines that can cause dysentery. It's not something you catch from the air; Shigella spreads through fecal-oral transmission, meaning it is passed when someone takes in tiny amounts of fecal matter from an infected person or a contaminated source. This can happen through contaminated food, contaminated water, touching surfaces with the bacteria on them and then touching your mouth, or direct contact with an infected person.

There are several species of Shigella, each with slightly different traits, but all of them can cause illness. Symptoms often include diarrhea, which may be bloody, fever, stomach cramps, and tenesmus, which is the feeling that you need to pass stool even when your bowels are empty.

Because it is so contagious, Shigella outbreaks can happen in places where hygiene is poor or where many people are close together, such as daycare centers, nursing homes, prisons, and schools. Public health officials closely watch Shigella infections and try to control outbreaks through better sanitation and education about proper handwashing. While most cases are mild and get better on their own, severe shigellosis can require hospital care and antibiotic treatment.

So, while you might not think about bacteria often, Shigella is a reminder of the importance of food safety, hygiene, and public health in keeping us all healthy.
