The word "shekel" refers to both an ancient unit of weight and a currency name with roots stretching back more than 3,000 years to the ancient Near East. In its earliest form, the shekel was not a minted coin at all. It was a specific measurement, often of silver, so a merchant could weigh out a set amount of precious metal to determine value in a trade. It was less like modern pocket change and more like using a standard weight of silver in everyday business.

The Bible frequently mentions shekels in the context of payments for land, services, and offerings. For instance, the Hebrew Bible recounts King David purchasing a threshing floor for fifty shekels of silver. This system of weights was common among the Israelites, Babylonians, Phoenicians, and many other civilizations throughout the ancient Near East.

After centuries of falling out of common use, the name was brought back for Israel's currency in the 20th century. The current version, the New Israeli Shekel (symbol: ₪; code: ILS), was introduced in 1985 to replace the old shekel after a period of very high inflation. Today, when people say "shekel," they usually mean the modern money used in Israel.

Still, its ancient story gives the word extra depth. It reminds us that money is not just a modern system of numbers and notes. It is also part of a much older human story about trade, value, and trust.
