shareholding

noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /ʃˈeəhəʊldɪŋ/

US

  • /ˈʃɛrˌhoʊldɪŋ/

Description

A shareholding is the shares, or stock, that a person or group owns in a company. When you buy shares, you buy a small piece of that business. Think of it like cutting a pie into slices: each slice is a share, and your shareholding is the number of slices you own.

The size of your shareholding shows how much of the company belongs to you and may give you certain rights, such as voting on company matters or receiving dividends. You might also hear about "institutional shareholdings," which means shares owned by large groups such as pension funds or insurance companies.
