A serif is a small stroke or flourish added to the end of a letter's main strokes in certain typefaces (font styles). These little details can appear at the top and bottom of letters—think of the "feet" on the capital "T" in Times New Roman, or the distinct terminals on the lowercase "e".

Historically, serifs were believed to improve readability by helping the eye move smoothly across a page of text, creating a sort of invisible line for the reader to follow. They originated with ancient Roman inscriptions carved into stone, where they helped define the edges of letters and prevented the ends of strokes from appearing ragged. Over time, serifs became a defining characteristic of traditional book printing and newspapers. Fonts with serifs are often called "serif fonts" (such as Times New Roman, Garamond, or Georgia) and tend to be perceived as formal, classic, and trustworthy.

However, not all fonts have serifs! Fonts without them are known as "sans-serif"—using the French word sans, meaning "without." Examples include Arial, Helvetica, and Calibri. These are often favored in modern digital design for their clean, minimalist aesthetic and high legibility on screens.

The choice between a serif and sans-serif font can significantly impact the overall look and feel of a piece of writing. Designers carefully consider this when choosing typefaces to convey a specific message or create a particular mood. So, while they might seem like small details, serifs play a surprisingly important role in how we perceive and process written information!
