In child development, it refers to the early stage when babies learn about the world by seeing, touching, tasting, hearing, and moving their bodies. In a wider sense, it also describes learning that happens through physical action and feedback.
This term is most often used in psychology for a specific period in infant development, but it can also describe skills learned through physical experience, like riding a bike or playing an instrument. You do not learn to ride a bike only by thinking about it; you learn by doing it and feeling what works. A potter shaping clay also depends on this close link between touch and movement.

Most famously, sensorimotor refers to the first stage of cognitive development in Jean Piaget's theory. They learn that objects exist even when they are out of sight (object permanence) by repeatedly interacting with them—shaking a rattle, dropping a toy, or reaching for a caregiver.
However, sensorimotor isn't limited to babies! Any skill learned through physical practice and sensory feedback can be described as sensorimotor. A musician developing muscle memory on an instrument is engaging in sensorimotor learning. An athlete perfecting their technique relies heavily on the connection between feeling their body move and seeing the results. Even something as common as typing involves a sensorimotor loop: you see the letters, your fingers move to type them, and your eyes confirm the accuracy on the screen.
Ultimately, sensorimotor is more than just a developmental stage; it's a fundamental way we all learn and interact with the world around us—a constant dance between what we feel and what we do.
