semicircle

C2
noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /sˈɛmɪsˌɜːkəl/

US

  • /sˈɛmɪsˌɜːkəl/

Description

Imagine cutting a perfect circle exactly in half. That gives you this shape. It is a flat shape with one straight side, made by the diameter, and one curved side, made by the arc. You can see it in many places, from old arched windows to the shape of a classroom protractor.

Think about a rainbow. It often looks like a bright arc in the sky, like half of a circle. Or picture a pizza cut right down the middle; each large piece has this shape. In building and design, it is valued for its balanced look and strength. It is more than just a math word; it is a shape that appears often in the world around us.
