The prefix “semi-” comes from Latin and means “half” or “partly.” It usually tells you that something is not complete, not full, or only partly connected to something else. You see it in many everyday words, and the basic idea stays quite steady: one part of a whole, or something that falls between two clear states.

You will meet it most often at the start of another word. A semicircle is half of a circle. A semi-detached house shares one wall with the house next to it, so it is only partly separate. A semi-final is the match or round before the final. A semi-professional athlete is not fully professional, but is more serious than an amateur. Semi-annual usually means happening twice a year, every six months, because the year is split into two halves.

But “semi” can also stand alone as a noun. In North American English, it often means a semi-truck, a large truck that pulls a semi-trailer. The trailer is called “semi” because it is only partly supported by its own wheels and partly supported by the tractor. In some places, “semi” can also be short for semi-detached house or semi-formal, but those uses depend more on local context.
