Selection is a flexible word built around the idea of choosing or what has been chosen. At its core, it means picking something from a larger group, whether that is a song on your playlist, a candidate for a job, or ingredients for a recipe. If you say "the restaurant offered a wide selection of appetizers," you mean there were many options available, usually with some variety and quality.

While "selection" is a noun, it is closely tied to the action of picking. A manager selects members for a team, a chef selects the freshest produce, and a reader selects a favorite book from a shelf. Each of these actions leads to a selection.
