Because they are fragile and depend on healthy coastal habitats, many species are at risk from habitat loss, pollution, and overfishing.

In everyday English, the word usually refers to the real sea animal. It may also appear in stories, art, or learning materials because of its unusual shape and gentle image. When people hear "seahorse," they usually think of a small, delicate fish that looks a little like a horse and lives quietly among sea plants and coral.
