Picture a rugby match: players from both teams lock together in a tight pack and push to win the ball. That is the main meaning of scrummage. Outside rugby, the word can also describe a brief, disorderly struggle or a tight crowd, especially when people are pushing and competing for space or attention. In these wider uses, the idea is still the same: people are bunched tightly together, movement is limited, and there is some pushing, confusion, or competition. You might read about a scrummage near a shop door when a sale begins, or a press scrummage around a public figure after an announcement.

The word usually suggests physical closeness and disorder more than open violence. It is less about a long fight and more about a packed, rough, confused clash. Even when it is used in a figurative way, it keeps that picture of bodies crowded together in a struggle for position, possession, or attention.
