Scrimshaw is a kind of carving and engraving that grew out of the long voyages of 19th-century whalers. Sailors spent months or even years at sea, and many passed the time by cutting detailed pictures and patterns into whale teeth, bone, or ivory. These works often showed ships, whales, sweethearts back home, or scenes from daily life at sea. The result was both art and memory: a small story etched into a hard, pale surface. Today, the word can also be used for similar work on other materials, but its strongest historical link is to sailors and whale products.
Scrimshaw refers to the art of carving or engraving designs onto whale teeth, bone, baleen, or ivory, most famously practiced by sailors on 19th-century whaling voyages. It was more than a pastime. For men who could be away at sea for years, it offered a way to stay busy, express themselves, and hold on to memories of home. During the whaling era, useful parts of the whale were saved for many purposes, and teeth or bone sometimes became the surface for this work.
The process usually involved scratching a design into the surface and then rubbing in color, often made from soot, ink, or other dark material, so the lines would stand out. Common subjects included ships, whales, ports, sea life, portraits of loved ones, and decorative patterns. Some pieces were purely artistic, while others were practical objects such as tools, needles, boxes, or game pieces. In that way, scrimshaw could be both a record of a sailor's life and an everyday object shaped by hand.
Today, traditional work made from whale products is heavily restricted or banned in many places because of wildlife protection laws. Even so, the word is still sometimes used for similar engraved work on legally obtained materials such as walrus ivory or fossil mammoth ivory.
