Some modern OLED displays can still have burn-in or image retention problems, but today a screensaver is usually more about appearance than protection. In many cases, dimming the display or turning the screen off is more useful than showing moving images. Still, screensavers remain a popular way to personalize your digital environment and add visual interest when your device is not in use. They can be anything from simple text scrolling across the screen to elaborate 3D animations or high-definition slideshows of personal memories.

The context of usage is almost exclusively digital. You will often hear people talk about setting a screensaver, downloading a new one, or customizing the timing of its activation. While the term evokes a sense of nostalgia for the "flying toasters" or "bouncing logos" of older computers, it remains a staple of modern user interfaces. Even if the technical need for them has shifted over time, their appeal as a form of digital expression remains strong.
