Schistosomiasis (pronounced shis-toe-so-MY-uh-sis) is a parasitic disease caused by blood flukes—tiny worms that live in certain types of freshwater snails. It's prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in Africa, the Middle East, parts of Asia, and South America. The disease affects millions of people worldwide, often impacting communities with limited access to clean water and sanitation.

The life cycle is fascinating (and a little unsettling!). Snails release microscopic forms of the parasite into the water. When humans come into contact with contaminated water—through swimming, wading, washing clothes, or even bathing—the parasites penetrate the skin. They then travel through the bloodstream and mature in blood vessels around the intestines or bladder, where they produce eggs. Many of these eggs become trapped in body tissues, causing inflammation and damage over time.

Early symptoms can include an itchy rash, fever, chills, cough, and muscle aches. Over time, chronic schistosomiasis can lead to serious health problems such as liver damage, urinary tract damage, blood in the urine or stool, anemia, bladder cancer, and, in some cases, neurological complications.

The disease is diagnosed through blood, urine, or stool tests. Thankfully, it's treatable with medication (praziquantel), but reinfection is common if people continue to be exposed to contaminated water. Prevention focuses on providing access to safe water, sanitation, and health education. Public health programs often involve snail control measures as well.

Schistosomiasis isn't a disease you're likely to encounter in most parts of the world, but understanding it highlights the crucial link between environmental factors, poverty, and public health—and the importance of clean water for all.
