The word "scavenger" describes a person or animal that searches for useful things among waste, leftovers, or abandoned material. It is more than simple collecting. It suggests looking through what others have thrown away, ignored, or left behind, often because there may still be value in it. Think of a beachcomber searching for sea glass after a storm or a raccoon rummaging through garbage cans. Both fit the basic idea well.

Historically, the term had a more civic connotation. In many 14th to 19th-century cities, official "scavengers" were employed to clean the streets, collecting refuse and keeping public spaces tidy. This origin gives the word an underlying sense of practicality and duty.

Today, "scavenger" is used more broadly. A person who hunts for bargains at flea markets might be playfully called a scavenger. In literature and film, scavengers are often shown as tough people in harsh settings, surviving by searching old buildings, vehicles, or ruins for supplies. In biology, the term also refers to animals that feed on dead organisms, such as vultures or hyenas. These animals play an important role by helping clear away dead matter.

The term can also be used figuratively for someone who gathers bits of information from many scattered sources. For example: "She is a political scavenger, always picking up bits of gossip to build a larger story." Whether it involves survival, street cleaning, animal behavior, or gathering information, a scavenger is defined by the habit of finding use or value in what has been left behind.
