A scarp is a steep slope or ridge formed by erosion or faulting, essentially acting as a cliff-like feature that marks a significant break in the land's surface. The term is derived from the Italian scarpa, meaning "slope," and has historically been used in both geography and military architecture. While we often associate scarps with towering mountain landscapes, they vary greatly in scale—ranging from massive cliffs hundreds of feet high to subtle "scarplets" only a few inches tall.

In a geological context, scarps are primarily formed in two ways. Erosion occurs when softer rock layers wear away, leaving behind a "caprock" of harder, more resistant material that forms the scarp face. Faulting, on the other hand, is the result of tectonic activity, where the earth's crust fractures and one side shifts vertically relative to the other, creating a "fault scarp." You will often find these features on cuestas—hills with a gentle slope on one side and a sharp scarp on the other.

Historically, the word also has a specific meaning in fortification: the "scarp" (or escarp) is the inner slope of a ditch surrounding a fortress, designed to be too steep for an enemy to climb.

Whether found in nature or man-made defenses, scarps tell a story of pressure and change. For example: "The ancient river carved a prominent scarp into the canyon wall," or "Geologists identified a major fault line marked by a clear scarp in the desert landscape." Next time you see a sudden, steep drop-off in the terrain, you're likely looking at a scarp—a literal edge in the earth's long history!
