Sarin is an organophosphorus compound classified as a nerve agent, a group of extremely toxic chemicals that disrupt the nervous system. It was first synthesized in 1938 by German scientists during research related to insecticides, and its potential as a chemical weapon quickly became apparent.

The danger of sarin lies in its ability to interfere with an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase, which is crucial for regulating nerve impulses. When this enzyme is blocked, nerves remain constantly stimulated, leading to uncontrollable muscle contractions, paralysis, and ultimately, respiratory failure. Even minimal exposure—through skin contact, inhalation, or ingestion—can be fatal. Symptoms appear rapidly, often within seconds to minutes.

Sarin has been used in several devastating attacks throughout history. The most infamous is the 1995 Tokyo subway sarin attack, carried out by the Aum Shinrikyo cult, which killed 13 people and injured thousands. Sarin has also been used during the Syrian Civil War, resulting in widespread casualties and international outrage.

Due to its extreme toxicity and potential for mass destruction, sarin is classified as a weapon of mass destruction and is prohibited by the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), an international treaty that aims to eliminate chemical weapons worldwide.
